Thames & Hudson

Celebrating 500 years of creative excellence

Book titled "Lives of the Great Makers" on a coral background, featuring a patterned fabric spine and a black-and-white photograph of an elderly craftsperson holding a handmade vessel. Subtitle credits editors Rebecca Knott and James Robinson, with Thames & Hudson and V&A logos at the bottom.

Commissioned by Thames & Hudson for the Victoria and Albert Museum, we were asked to design Lives of the Great Makers: 500 Years of Creative Excellence. This anthology highlights the women and men whose pioneering craft shaped the decorative arts, featuring forty illustrated biographies from the Renaissance to today. Our role was to design the full book, creating clean typographic layouts that let the makers’ stories and works take centre stage.

Creative approach

We adopted a minimal and elegant design system, balancing white space with carefully considered typography. The layout allows artworks and objects to shine, while maintaining a consistent framework across different makers and eras. A restrained use of colour supports clarity, while the pacing of large imagery and text ensures the book feels both scholarly and engaging.

Impact

By presenting 500 years of craftsmanship with clarity and reverence, our design reinforces the V&A’s role as the world’s leading museum of applied arts, creating a definitive and enduring reference for both specialists and general readers.
