Crafting a catalogue for the Venice Biennale

Book titled "Sonia Boyce: Feeling Her Way" on a warm beige background, featuring an abstract geometric cover design in black and gold foil textures. Central black panel displays the title in gold typography, with authors Emma Ridgway and Courtney J. Martin credited below.

Yale University Press commissioned us to design the exhibition catalogue for Sonia Boyce OBE, who represented Great Britain at the 59th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia. Boyce, known for her powerful multimedia work, won the Golden Lion for Best National Participation at the Biennale.

Our role

We designed the cover, internal layouts, and artworking, creating a catalogue that placed Boyce’s artwork at the centre. Working closely with her team, we wove her visual language into the design — echoing her use of gold, geometric patterns, and sharp angles throughout the publication.

Mirroring the exhibition experience

The catalogue was designed to capture the tone and impact of Boyce’s installation, with chapter openers and layouts reflecting the rhythm and layering of her work. Our aim was to create a book that felt like an extension of the pavilion itself, balancing scholarship with a bold and immersive design approach.

Impact

As the official record of Boyce’s Golden Lion–winning pavilion, the catalogue stands as both a lasting celebration of her achievement and a testament to her influence on contemporary British art.
