Hardie Grant Books

Playful design for budding writers

Light blue book cover titled "Write Every Day" by Harriet Griffey, featuring bold white and orange hand-lettered typography, the subtitle "Daily practice to kickstart your creative writing," and a small illustrated pen icon, set against a peach background.

Hardie Grant Books commissioned Write Every Day by Harriet Griffey to inspire new writers and help them build lasting creative habits. The ambition was clear: create a book that cut through a crowded category with energy, warmth, and originality.

Our role

We led art direction, design, and illustration commissioning, ensuring every visual choice amplified the book’s creative purpose. From cover to interior, our role was to translate the tools of writing into a design language that felt open, playful, and motivating.

A playful visual system

The cover set the tone with overlapping type, bold embossing, a spray-blocked orange edge, and loose illustrative details. Inside, handwritten typefaces sit alongside contemporary sans serif and mono fonts, giving rhythm and variety to exercises, prompts, and reflections. Icons were designed to guide readers through tips, activities, and reminders, making the book easy to browse and inviting to return to.

Illustrating the writing journey

Illustrator Dick Vincent was commissioned and art directed to create chapter openers and spot illustrations. His work adds warmth and humour, with characters and scenes that bring tasks and quotes to life. The result is a book that doesn’t just instruct—it invites.

I love the design and illustrations that make this book such a delight to look at and flick through.
