Designing a contemporary guide to plant-based colour

Book titled "Natural Dyeing" on a warm terracotta background, featuring softly draped textiles in earthy tones of rust, ochre, and cream arranged in a basin. Subtitle reads "Learn how to create colour and dye textiles naturally," with the author's name, Kathryn Davey, at the top.

Hardie Grant Books commissioned us to design the UK edition of Kathryn Davey’s Natural Dyeing. The book explores the endless possibilities of plant-based dyes, from preparing fibres and foraging ingredients to experimenting with a range of dyeing methods and creative projects.

Our role

We designed the cover for the UK market, creating a clean photographic layout paired with elegant typography. The brief was to capture the book’s practical approach while ensuring strong appeal for a modern craft audience.

Creative approach

We focused on clarity, letting the photography highlight the textures and natural hues of plant-based dyes.

Impact

The book positions Kathryn Davey’s expertise within a wider movement towards sustainable making, offering readers an accessible, beautifully designed guide to natural dyeing.
