Quarto Books

Designing a sustainable series

Two books from the "RHS Greener Gardening" series on a pale green background. Left: "Containers" by Ann Treneman, with a green spine and a cover photo of flowering and fruiting plants grown in pots. Right: "Vegetables" by Sally Nex, with an orange spine and a cover photo of freshly harvested vegetables arranged in a crate.

Commissioned by Quarto Books for the Royal Horticultural Society, we were asked to design the series style for the new RHS Greener Gardening books, beginning with Vegetables and Containers. These handbooks focus on sustainable gardening practices, from growing crops with minimal impact to creating eco-friendly container gardens.

Our role

We designed the series style, covering both the internal layouts and covers of the first two titles. The framework was created to be flexible and extendable, ensuring a consistent identity across future books while allowing each to highlight its specific focus.

Creative approach

Clean, structured layouts guide readers through techniques, seasonal tasks, and plant directories with clarity. Photography was used to balance practical step-by-step guidance with inspiring results. Typography was chosen to feel approachable while carrying the authority of the RHS name. Subtle design variations give each title individuality while keeping the series immediately recognisable.

Impact

By creating a strong and distinctive series style, we gave RHS and Quarto Books a cohesive foundation for Greener Gardening — positioning it as an essential resource for sustainable gardeners.
