Illuminating the science of the stars

Book titled "Forty Ways to Know a Star" on a pale lavender background, featuring a deep-space image overlaid with fine geometric star-chart lines. Subtitle reads "Using Stars to Understand Astronomy," with author Jillian Scudder credited at the bottom.

Commissioned by Unipress Books, we were asked to design Forty Ways to Know a Star by astrophysicist Dr Jillian Scudder. The book offers forty different perspectives on stars — from their births to their deaths — bringing together science, storytelling, and imagery to make complex ideas accessible.

Our role

We designed the cover and internal template, setting the illustration and infographic style. Our role was to establish a look and feel that communicated authority while ensuring clarity.

Creative approach

We created a clean typographic framework paired with a bold cover that balanced elegance and scientific authority. The internal template was designed to flex across text, imagery, and illustration, making room for both scientific detail and moments of visual storytelling. Infographics and illustration guidelines were set up to ensure consistency across the final book.

Impact

Our design gave Forty Ways to Know a Star a contemporary, engaging identity — helping transform complex astrophysics into a book that feels clear, approachable, and visually compelling.
