Designing a portrait of a neo-romantic artist

Book titled "John Craxton: A Life of Gifts" on a pale blue background, featuring a painted portrait on the cover. Bold yellow and white typography overlays the artwork, with the title and artist’s name at the top and author Ian Collins credited at the bottom.

Yale University Press commissioned us to design the cover for John Craxton: A Life of Gifts by Ian Collins. The book tells the story of the British artist John Craxton (1922–2009), whose adventurous life and work moved from early Neo-Romantic influences in London to a vibrant personal style inspired by his later years in Greece.

Our role

We designed the cover, choosing a bold typographic approach over a portrait of Craxton. The design was created to reflect both the individuality of the artist and the rich storytelling of the biography.

Creative approach

Typography was set with strength and clarity, complementing the portrait of Craxton without overpowering it. The simplicity of the layout allows the subject to remain the focus, while the type gives the book presence and authority.

Impact

The book adds to Yale’s distinguished list of artist monographs, celebrating Craxton’s life and work with a design that ensures both clarity and impact for readers and collectors.
